Quality post-secondary education system should be a high and urgent government priority as higher education plays a crucial role in our economic, social and cultural development. Higher education, supported by public funds, has great potential to lessen social and economic disparities, thus promoting social cohesion. Post-secondary institutions also provide stable public sector jobs for many. Canada ranks high currently for the number of people that attend post-secondary but this reputation is at risk. Growth for canada has been low for many years now. As well, canada"s financial commitment to all levels of education has been at an all-time low. In most european countries, tuition fees are immensely less than tuition fees of canada. In some of the poorest european countries, tuition fees are free.
