The criminal process: the activity and the actors that respond to crime. Crime rate has gone down over the years, yet spending on criminal justice system increases. Since 2002, per capita spending has increased 23%. Crime and criminal justice: disproportionate amount of attention is paid to crime, conservative government focus on criminal justice. (tough on crime) The criminalization of politics the impression that politics are doing something to combat crime when indeed they are not. Factual guilt: crime-control (conveyer belt, efficiency is key. Factual guilt does not always mean legal guilt. Crime control model wants to get you efficiently from factual guilt to legal guilt as quick as possible. Legal guilt: the legislature is the ultimate authority, not the courts. Reliance on the criminal sanction (punishment: criminal sanction is a positive guarantor of our societal freedoms. This is what deters people and protects society.
