Document Summary

Study of production & perception of speech sounds: articulatory, acoustic, auditory. As we speak, we draw air up from lungs (usually) & out the vocal tract to produce speech sounds. Open your mouth a bit, don"t move anything else, & produce a sound = some kind of vowel-like sound. If you want to produce a k" sound, what do you have to change: tongue has to be used. What about going from k" to a t" sound: you feel your tongue touching in front of mouth instead of back, diff part of tongue used. Does the tongue move: less complete constriction air can still flow. What about going from s" to a z" sound: something changes in throat. What about going from z" to a b" sound: tongue not involved, lips close together. Changing from 1 sound to another involves moving tongue, lips, & changing something in your throat.
