LING 1001 Lecture Notes - Lecture 22: Principle Of Compositionality, Grammaticalization, Evidentiality
Document Summary
In the same way that we can discuss semantic relations b/w words, we can also discuss semantic relations b/w sentences. We will look at 3 semantic relations among sentences. 2 sentences that have the same meaning are paraphrases of each other. Examples: (a) the police chased the burglar. (b) the burglar was chased by the police. (a) at 3pm the class will begin. (b) the class is going to begin at 3pm. Sentences that are related in this way are said to have the same truth conditions: That is, they"re true under the same conditions. Examples: (a) the police chased the burglar. (b) the burglar was chased by the police. If it"s true that the police chased the burglar, then it"s also true that the burglar was chased by the police. When truth of 1 sentence guarantees truth of another, we say there"s a relation of entailment.
