Stem can be root (contributes most semantic/ lexical meaning. Root is first or lowest level stem (something attaches to it first) Stem is form that affix can attach to, can be several stem but only 1 root. Consider category of root and category of affixes and what can attach. Help" is noun, can"t attach (not un first, has to be ful") Becomes helpful" an adjective so un-" can attach. The structure for unhelpful makes sense beyond that un" can"t attach. Unhelpful means not helpful, doesn"t mean full of unhelp. So affix un- takes scope over all of helpful. Other way: reuse and able can attach to verbs. Think about meaning, and it makes sense. Ambiguous meaning unlockable: ambiguous what the meaning is, lock can"t be locked or can be unlocked. Meaning comes from structure, two different morphological structures. Re- and ed both attach to verbs. Can change a verb to past tense, but can"t re a past tense verb.
