This is determined by sex chromosomes: differentiation occurs as a result of developing gonads, dht is important for the development of external genitalia and to some extent masculinization. Testosterone is converted into estrogen to sexually differentiate a number of brain structures of some behaviors but not others: not all species develop following the same genetic and hormonal program. Why do species invest in children without concerns for reproduction: reproductive success. Males mate with as many as possible to pass on as many genes as possible. Females ensure offspring survive to lead to survival of genes.
