NEUR 3306 Lecture Notes - Lecture 12: Striatum, Reinforcement, Putamen
Document Summary
Introduction: make them play hard and forever: variable ratio interval. For example, get certain checkpoints, get a sword, kill 100 orcs etc. Essentially you put them in a second order schedule of reinforcement. You get them to work for secondary reinforcements before they get the big w (which is their reward). This also happens in addiction, you need to engage in a series of activities before you actually get the drug (get money, find drug dealer, buy drug, do routine to take drug). At this schedule there is always a reason to be active. They do(cid:374)"t k(cid:374)o(cid:449) (cid:449)he(cid:374) the(cid:455)"re goi(cid:374)g to get a (cid:862)(cid:271)o(cid:374)us(cid:863) or a (cid:862)po(cid:449)erup(cid:863) or (cid:449)hate(cid:448)er. It (cid:272)ould (cid:271)e directly after they have just gotten one or hours later. So their motivation to keep playing remains high. Also, this agrees with neurochemical finders that unpredictable rewards lead to greater da release in v. striatum than expected rewards (schultz, 2011).
