William james: one of the three big american philosopher (the harvard holy trinity"), who belong to the school of thought known as pragmatism. Charles pierce was the first pragmatist, but james was the one who called pierce"s view. Pierce"s and james" ideas were picked up by john dewey, another influential american philosopher. Richard rorty (died in 2007) considered himself a true pragmatist. James was a psychologist by education (brother of the novelist henry james) His first book, which made him famous is the principle of psychology , published in 1890. James changed his mind by the time he wrote his pragmatism: a new name for some old ways of thinking (1907), of which we"re reading lecture 2. He moved away from psychology toward a philosophy of experience. Pragmatism is often defined as a theory of truth and a theory of meaning. Note that not everyone agrees with this definition of pragmatism.
