Contractarian = people sign away some of their freedom to the state (hobbes) Predatory = war makes states and states make war (tilly) There is an ambient fear that someone will attack you. The state comes in to protect you. This is why the people like the state. This is why the state needs an enemy, someone to fight. Nation = people who share a culture, idea, language, etc. Not all nations have state, not all states have only one nation. Also known as hard and soft power respectively. Positive sanctions (lower tariffs, good status, etc. ) Negative sanctions (freezing accounts, no trade, etc. ) Example of negative sanctions: canada and iran. Compliance: getting a state to do what you want it to do (using force) o. Keeping a state from doing something you don"t want it to do (using force: dissuading them from military action, m. a. d. Democracies don"t go to war with each other.
