PSYC 1001 Lecture Notes - Lecture 7: Cocktail Party, Long Term Ecological Research Network, Serval
Document Summary
Encoding - involves transforming information into a form that can be stored in memory. Examples of errors: competition information, if you"re stressed (misinformation) Storage - involves keeping or maintaining information in memory. Retrieval - occurs when information stored in memory is brought to mind. Attention is seen as a lter to determine things we remember and things we wont. Cocktail party phenomenon: suggests we lter info late in the process - we can block info out and only pick up on that which has meaning to us. Attention is not enough - we need to process information at a deeper level if we want to remember it for a long time. Deep creates a mental imaginary - more likely to remember it. Has capacity of 5 to 9 bits of information. Bits of information can be made larger by a process called chunking. Information can be kept in short term memory by rehearsal.
