Sleep deprived = the strength of sleeping would overpower everything that you need to do. Motivation is a concept that concerns itself with finding the reasons why. Drive: psychological state that motivates us to satisfy needs. A state of being neither good or bad. 2 types of motivation: approach motivation and avoidance motivation. Sex - adaptive - ensures the continuation of a species. Maslow"s hierarchy of needs - start at the bottom. Social - long run positive outcome, short run isn"t important. *self-determination theory* - not in lecture slides on culearn. Basic premise: humans are naturally active and seek opportunities to learn and grow. We want to be masters of our own path. Become a master in something = feel good about yourself = even more motivated to do more things.
