Document Summary
Emotions are brief, specific psychological and physiological responses that help humans meet goals, many of which are social. Facial expressions of emotions typically last between 1 and 5 seconds. However, many of the physiological responses that accompany emotion sweaty palms, the blush, the goose bumps for example last dozens of seconds or minutes. The moods that we experience, for example, when we feel irritable or blue, lst for hours and even days. Emotional disorders such as depression, last for weeks or months. Philosophers call the focus of an emotional experience its intentional object. They motivate us to act in specific ways that affect important relationships and help us navigate our social environment. Gratitude = motivates us to reward others with their cooperative actions. Guilt = motivates us to make amends wen we have harmed other people. Angel = impels us to right social wrongs and restore justice.
