Scienti c study of how thoughts, feelings and behaviours are shaped by the real or imagined presence of others and environmental cues. Social in uence > overt: shown openly (ex. persuasion, bullying, peer pressure) > covert: mere presence (hidden, feeling as though people are judging your appearance) Focus on the interpretation of a social situation rather than the objective. The goal of social psychology is to identify universal properties of human nature that make everyone susceptible to social in uence regardless of their class or culture. Distinct method from related elds such as: philosophy (insight vs. scienti c study) > developmental psychology: includes social in uence but it is not a main. > personality psychology: focus on personality, not the situation. > sociology: focus on society as a whole factor // looks more at genetics, puberty, personal values and beliefs. There is no easy way to prove someone correct unless tested ex.
