Refers to the process of breaking up of friendship, romantic or marital relationship: continuing bonds: people who experience report feeling distress and report trying to maintain the connection to their past partner. Anxious attachment: report more continuing bonds and more distress. The need to belong is defined as the desire to form and maintain close, lasting relationships with some other individuals. The need to belong drives people to affiliate, commit and remain together and makes it reluctant to live alone. The two ingredients to belongingness: regular social contract: To satisfy the need to belong, it is important to have regular positive contact with others (watching tv together or eating together). However, not all interactions are quite as satisfying, these are aversive social contacts (fighting and arguing) Ex: toll booth worker small social interactions rather than long contacts: stable framework: Having an on-going relationship with others that contains mutual care and concern for each other is important.
