Polygraph: measures the subtle changes in the individual"s hart rate and respiration/perspiration. Varies depend on type of polygraph being used. Lie detection: polygraph machines do not measures deception, instead it measures physiological responses that are normally associated with deception. Approaches to using a polygraph: comparison question test, 3 phases test. R: did you take the ring: concealed information test, probes for guilty knowledge rather then determining whether someone is lying, guilty suspects will recognize and related more to the crime related choice. (guilty knowledge) Example: the robber dropped something while escaping. His car keys: advantages: less chance of false positives, disadvantages: reliance on suspects knowledge, may know what happened but not be guilty. i. Micro facial expressions: leakage of emotions through facial expressions provides clues that may betray deception. (frank& Ground truth: the knowledge of whether the individuals is actually guilty or not.
