Risk assessment: estimate probability (risk) or future criminal behavior. Risk assessment should be foundation of treatment & management. Prior to the 1990s, risk seen as a dichotomy dangerous or not dangerous. Now, risk regarded as a range shift has added a dimension of probability; important aspect is reducing risk. Focus on probability reflects 2 considerations: highlights idea that probabilities may change over time, recognizes that risk level reflects an interaction among a person"s characteristics, background, Process of risk management involves prediction & management. Prediction probability that an individual will commit future criminal/violent acts; identify risk factors. Management development of interventions to manage/reduce the likelihood of future violence; identify treatment(s) or conditions to be implemented. Civil contexts refer to the private rights of individuals & the legal proceedings connected w/ such right; e. g. civil commitment, involuntary commitment, not criminally responsible (ncr) Criminal contexts refer to situations in which an individual has been charged w/ a crime; e. g. pre- sentencing, pre-release.
