Wrongful convictions dna proves that person is innocent approx. 25% contain false confessions, also hard to determine. Voluntary false confession not influenced by police confess without external pressures. Reasons: protect real offender, fame (notoriety), need to relieve some other guilt, cannot distinguish from fact and fantasy (could be mental ill or disabled) Coerced compliant confession caused by police interrogation, coercive techniques by police pressure suspect into confessing even though the suspect knows they are innocent. Reasons: escape further interrogation, gain a promise for reward (being released) or threatened punishment is removed. Coerced-internalized confession confesses wrongly but then begins to believe they committed the crime create false (fabricated memories) highly suggestive interviews by police.
