Symbolic emerges during second year of life, key because it suggests that the child is now capable of mental representation, to be able to mentally represent something they have seen in the environment. Operational refers to the internal mental activity that we become capable of doing, it becomes more than being able to mentally represent something in the environment, you do something with that mental representation. Allows you to reach out and grab something, permits children to act on their environment.
