As soon as you present a word and want it to recognize a letter, it processes the features, recognizes letters, moves to word level. W-o-r d, k, n but it will never come up with q, u, f. As soon as the words get activated, it sends down possible letters. Top down: when given w-o-r, based on knowledge we begin to fit letters into that word, d, k, n.
