Risk prediction vs. management: risk prediction-likelihood offender will reoffend, outcomes. Methodological issues: both are very important, base rate problem, risk management- interventions/ strategies to manage an offenders. Risk assessment in canada: risk assessment should be accurate, transparent and consistent, civil setting, civil commitment. To see if mentally ill patient should be hospitalized to prevent. To see if children will need to be protected from abuse. False positive- person is predicted to be violent but is not. Some crimes are not reported: unstructured judgement. Individual clinician make risk judgement like judges: disparity present, use prior to structured assessments, allowed a clinician to take into account individual facts. Problems: no guidelines or standardization, female offenders. Illusory correlations: risk factors in women, generally lower than risk than males. Some risk factors are more of an issue with female offenders.
