The media and public perspective: public safety e. g. public sex offender registries, what offenders are living in your neighbourhood. The criminal justice perspective: risk assessment plays large role in cjs: sentencing, security classification, treatment needs, treatment intensity, parole decisions, level of supervision. Target scarce resources (timing and intensity of treatment) Risk management develop intervention strategies to manage risk. Risk prediction assessing risk for future reoffending (is the person at risk for reoffending in the future) Risk assesment = prognosis (more difficult to understand, is not a diagnosis) Diagnosis = detecting presence or absence of a condition: e. g. broken bone. Prognosis = predicting likelihood of future event (uncertainty exists b/c it has not occurred yet, hard to predict the future: e. g. the next terrorist attack, risk assesment = prognosis (uncertain of what will happen in the future) Transparency of prognosis should be clear why decisions were made. Accuracy of prognosis should be accurate.
