Document Summary
Appropriate communication of this information to decision makers. Growing research on how risk info is ocmmunicated and interpreted. Clinicians, judges prefer non numerical terms (low med high) How info is presented can affect how risk is interpreted. Absolute recidivism rates rate of that specific person reoffending, not compared. Relative risk estimates person compared to another group. Ie 2. 5x more likely to reoffend compared to typical offender. Neglect the base rate, ie an individual can be in the 95th percentile of the scale, but that may only translate to a 40% recidivism rate. Even scales designed for same purpose provide different answers (little consistency across instruments) Pair your scale for your client and what you are trying to predict (ie sexual recidivism vs violent recidivism) Do high risk individuals reoffend more than the low risk individuals. Attempting to make a consistant way to label risk levels with set meanings.
