Deviance (deviant behavior): a social category representing behavior or appearance that is collectively condemned because it departs from norms & expectations. Social norms (normative behavior): the dominant rules & expectations for the way people are supposed to behave, feel, and appear in a particular social situation. Social norms can vary according to whom they are applied and whether people . Back them up with the force of law. Adhere to them in the public and private lives. Low-consensus deviance: there is considerable disagreement over whether a behavior or characteristic is deviant or not. High-consensus deviance: that a behavior or characteristic is deviant is widely accept. Crime: an act that breaks a criminal law. Laws: rules governing conduct created by those in positions of power; enforced by entities given the authority to do so. Collective morality: the collective conscience ; socially defines crime and often leads to society seeking retribution for an offense.
