SOCI 1005 Lecture Notes - Lecture 1: Petite Bourgeoisie, Naimans, Labour Power
Document Summary
What is a class based social system: under capitalism, social relationships are defined by labour, or what work we do and for how much. It would seem that our economic success or failure is a personal choice. Most of us have multiple statuses: woman, sister, mother, teacher. In pre-capitalist societies class relations were easily identified. Class vs. socioeconomic status: tend to think in terms of upper, middle, and lower class. Socioeconomic status: a designation that indicates ones social standing on the basis of the intersecting factors of income, occupation, and education: use of class vs. socioeconomic status is a source of debate within sociology. Ses hides structural inequality and assumes a classless society. It would seem that there is no class struggle, only difference. In contrast, class is determined only by economic ownership (naiman pages 96, 97) Being middle class: middle class is actually a reflection of key status symbols (working, middle or upper class)
