SOCI 2450 Lecture Notes - Lecture 3: 18 Months, Cesare Beccaria, Jeremy Bentham
Document Summary
Evidence based crime policy: demands empirical evidence of the effectiveness of the policy. Complaints against them are futile: you are not going to get justice if you go against the government. It sets a high requirement of experimental or quasi experimental research design, in which the population is randomly assigned: requirement for replication. The study that you undertook and the findings you have obtained have been researched before, and they have validated your findings: one study is not enough. The larger the sample size the more confidence there is in the results: the use of systematic reviews of studies. A review of every possible study that you can find related to the work that you are doing research on: narrative review never cites the sources, systematic review is very detailed. The more guilty pleas the faster things go: due process is about the rights of the accused, stops the assembly line and enforces accountability.
