Universities were highly dominated by men up until the twentieth century because women were denied access but women still played a central role in shaping sociology as an academic discipline. Women were seen as a part of the household, while the man was seen as the head of the household even though women do all the work in the home. Symbolic interactionism: focuses on the symbolic meaning that people develop and rely upon in the process of social interaction the assumption is that people act based on their subjective beliefs or perceptions of the world. Social darwinism: focus on human species as a living organism that evolves over time emphasis on biologically inherited tendencies of individuals (defined by some common trait). Marxisn: economic relations between men and women relations of dependence and class exploitation.
