Intro: culture is a complex concept which has had many diverse definitions throughout the history of anthropology. Out of the many definitions, sir edward tylor, a british anthropologist, was the first to define the concept of culture in 1871. Van esterik (2010), sir edward tylor states: [c]ulture, or civilization is that complex whole which includes knowledge, belief, art, law, morals, custom, and any other capabilities and habits acquired by man as a member of society . Culture exists anywhere humans exist as it the way humans live their lives. It is through the major elements of culture which, together, form individuals" way of life. These elements include symbols, language, values and norms. Because culture is learned and shared, these elements are transferred by cultures through generation after generation. Additionally, all humans share the same universal functions that we all must perform to stay alive (eating, drinking, sleeping and eliminating).
