ANTH 202 Lecture Notes - Lecture 11: Polytheism, Rastafari, Bible
Document Summary
Religion is a set of rituals rationalized by myth that mobilizes supernatural powers to achieve a desired condition in people and nature. Gives meaning to life and a sense of security. Beings and forces that one tries to manipulate by prayer, ritual and sacrifice (may be good or evil). Examples: gods (and goddesses), ancestral spirits, nonhuman spirits. Perceived as remote, powerful and often anthropomorphic (having human characteristics and often imperfections). Polytheism powers divided up between many gods that make up pantheon (may also have supreme god). Ancestors remain close after death to protect the living. Common in societies where descent is very important. Will intercede for you when you appeal to them. Must be appeased and made comfortable: keep shrines in home, set a place for them at dinner table, etc. Common in cultures that have a direct relationship with nature (such as foragers). Examples: mana for pacific islanders brings good fortune, strength, authority.
