Subsistence is about getting food and other resources. For us (urban people) we pay for food at the market 50% of world population will be urban by 2030. For everyone else there are 3 subsistence strategies: About 10,000 years ago (before domesticated plants and animals) everybody was a forager. Very rare now only 250,000 people worldwide. !kung bushmen kalahari desert of southern africa. Ach amazon tropical rainforest of south america. Mbuti pygmies congo rainforest of central africa. Blackfoot (historic) prairie of western canada & u. s. Small bands of people (<100) size of band can change seasonally. Very mobile always move to where the food is. Live in temporary camps and use local materials for shelter. For most foragers, 60% - 80% of food eaten are plants. Sexual division of labor men hunt animals and women gather plants. Egalitarian society share food, little difference in status, little or no property, no political organization.
