Arth 298 montreal: evolution through architecture and urbanism. 1642 when a group of french settlers founded montreal on the banks of the st. lawrence river in the area which is now part of old montreal. Montreal is now a popular destination for both tourists and montrealers. Beginning of the city, where everything started. First european settlement, in 165, birthplace of the city. Fortified city because it was a frontier town. Center of religious buildings, religious orders were very important at the time. End of 18th ce no need for fortification so the city was restricted, no longer needed the belt and removed it. Since the beginning montreal has been the target for attack. By the native, english and americans, bc it"s a town on the border, exposed to danger and an economic center. Not only quebec but montreal was also fortified along the city, big fortification in stone.
