Lachine canal was built by irish workers who came during the potato famine. Started in the 17th century and completed in the 19th century. Canal is series of falls which can create energy. Federal govenunent decided to sell these energies that created the first industrial center in the lower canada. Workers did not commute they lived where the work was. Lachine canal is a key element of the development of the city. People we always frying to find ways to jump the rapids rather than going by boat through the rapids. In 1689 construction began on the canal. Idea was to link an existing system of waterways. Between old mtl and lachine there used to be a seasonal lake (lac st. pierre ).
