Document Summary

Using the electrocardiogram (ecg) to record the electrical activity of the heart and easily understand if something is wrong with the cardiac cycle. Drawing of the heart beat which can be analysed and used to test for clinical abnormalities related to the conduction of electrical signals in the heart. Cardiac cycle: during a single heartbeat, the events associated with the flow of blood through the heart: various phases in pumping action of the heart. Two main periods of cardiac cycle: systole: ventricular contraction, diastole: ventricular relaxation. Valves open due to pressure gradients: av valves open when: atrial pressure > ventricular pressure, semilunar valves open when: ventricular pressure > arterial pressure. Biol 398, course #3 (may 11th, 2015: periods of valve opening and closing. Durations of systole and diastole are not equal; heart stays in the resting phase much more than the contractile phase. Normal heart beat at the resting rate is 72 beats/minute.
