We need repression to build civilization: psychoanalysis: analyst (doctor) and analysand (patient) Polymorphous: babies born without a sexual or gender identity (freud) Process of growing up narrow human identity and desire. Born with possibility of turning out either way (homo/heterosexual) Penis envy young girls inherent desire for a penis. Oedipus complex: when a male child is young, they want to kill their father and sexually desire their mother. Fear of castration, fear that father has castrated mother and will castrate him as well. Women suffer from what freud calls the electra complex, where the girls have the opposite issue and have penis envy. Their solution is to sexually desire the father. These issues interfere with mental development, so you repress them and they are stored in the unconscious. They become neuroses when you are an adult.
