CHEM 208 Lecture Notes - Lecture 3: Alkaline Earth Metal, Ionic Compound, Copper(I) Oxide
Document Summary
Module 3: the periodic table and naming compounds. * study all of the interactive periodic table on the site. Elements are arranged into: o! vertical columns called groups (or families) and horizontal rows called periods. Elements in the same group (or family) have similar chemical properties. Elements in a period have different chemical properties. For each element, the atomic number is given at the top of the symbol and the atomic mass at the bottom. The periods are designated with the numbers 1 to 7. The groups are designated with the numbers 1 (i) to 8 (viii) and a letter a or b. Group 8a are called noble (or rare, or inert) gases. Organic: compounds that contain at least one carbon atom. Inorganic: compounds that contain atoms other than carbon. Exceptions are inorganic compounds such as carbon monoxide (co), carbon dioxide (co2), etc.
