Software: programs that tell computer what to do (anything allowing you to do anything on computer) different from computer hardware. Data files (instructions) in computer memory that are executed upon command. Ex: microsoft office (word, excel,), internet explorer, windows live messenger, notepad, paint, adobe photoshop, solitaire, windows. Interfaces with hardware: allows computer"s hardware to work with application. Help use computer & have interfaces (mouse, keyboard, icons) Without them type programming to get anything done. Programmers & computer scientists create other software. Programmers use different languages (java, c++, or php) Utility programs, word-processing programs, spreadsheet software, digital image-editing, games, workplace-specific software, databases, medical software, business software . Entering text & printing sheet require long lines of programming code. Ex: start microsoft word (even moving mouse is a task) Instruction processed by cpu & activates microsoft word executable file (in memory) starts word program.
