Document Summary

In this lesson we shift our focus from the processes involved in the training function to survey the variety of training programs typically provided within an organization. For the would-be training and development professional, it is essential to become familiar with the various types of training programs, and their characteristic components and aims. If anything, this lesson should reinforce the notion that there is an expanding range of training requirements within the modern organization. Diversity and cross-cultural training are relatively new and reflect the effects of globalization. Finally, a recent innovation involves addressing training requirements across the value chain, or, as we sometimes say, the extended enterprise. To increase productivity, leading edge training and development organizations are addressing training needs not only within the firm, but also with suppliers, partners, distributors and customers. A recent u. s. survey in fact identified customer training as the fastest growing category over the last two years.
