Speech patterns/ingrained ass, pre-determined, what you expect when reading. Humans become a standing reserve through sex, desire and addiction. Birth control: desire unhooked, you can be free and sleep with who you want, it is a piece of technology. In 60s, the consumption culture arises and ellul says the pill makes sex more about consumption. Desire is a way to integrate us into the system. We have been taught to expect certain things from texts. Characters in the novel are attached to a system of control through sex. Our expectations are being met in texts, movies etc/ Chapter4, this happens: 30, speed picks up. The story is being acted out on us. Technology provides us with greater freedom, choice, objects, you can choose so much, but the system chooses what you can choose. You are free only in choosing the options, not creating the options.
