Forests are being depleted at an increasing rate. Fao (2001) estimates over 1. 1 billion hectares lost since agricultural revolution. One area is that of particular concern is the deforestation taking place within tropical forests. See maps pages 68 and 73, in text. Amazon, russia, canada: how did we view deforestation from the time of the romans until wwii. Dark areas inhabited by dark spirits that had to be expelled. Agriculture, colonized territories for world market take advantage of resources for low prices without considering effects on ecosystem. Clearing the way of hundreds of kilometres of forest and continue the way for destruction. Infertile soil. (leaves don"t fall so their nutrients are not concentrated in the soil). Women have to go further and further to gather wood.
