Any readings, films and said and lectures. Goal is to further technology, much less loyal to specific company and more loyal to silicon valley itself. Hierarchy is not set in stone as it is on east coast. Culture of risk: failure in east has huge repercussions on careers, whereas in west, less risk, encouragement to take risks. White men from similar backgrounds, stanford, home computer club. Fairchild semiconductors: this company had a mentality that encouraged spinoffs and start-ups. Indians and chinese in silicon valley now, minority: black, latino, women. People are freed by moving to cities. Cities are green field sites: interactions between different people create new things. Entrepreneurial city: cities becoming more like companies. Political economy of place: brand a neighbourhood and marketing a city. Space is something that is produced materially (infrastructure), socially and symbolically.
