In the early period, there is no english. English and british is not the same thing. Britannia was a province of the roman empire, it is at the periphery of the empire and it was very far away from the centers of mediterranean civilization. Before the romans got there, the people who lived there were called britons, they were celtic-speaking people, and they spoke the ancestor of welsh. Serviced by the local populations who, did benefit from the influx of jobs and money, but the extent of romanization of britain was pretty thin. At the end of the 4th century, the roman empire was experiencing problems, and as a result, the imperial forces began to withdraw from the peripheral territories. 410ce, the populations of britons that had been there before the romans came, they built lots of roads and villas, but they left.
