Document Summary

Top-down expectation bias: what we expect has an impact on what we believe we are experiencing. The priming information (what the hearer is told to expect) stands out. Top-down effects of expectation and belief can extend to judgments of taste or preference as well. Hollow-face illusion: so much of our brains are dedicated to recognizing faces and facial expressions that we see faces everywhere. Looking at the inside of a mask creates the hollow face illusion. We tend to see this as an outward pointing face instead of a hollow mask counters-signals because it is so unlikely that you will see a nose that is sticking in rather than sticking out. Backwards tape example: when you hear the song backwards without expectation of hearing anything all you hear are random noises but when you are expecting to hear a certain phrase you actually hear it.
