Background to the sudan: formerly - anglo-egyptian sudan. Independence from british rule- 1956: sudan has arab speaking moslems in the north. [38%]who control power and nilotics of the south who are predominantly christian as well as sudanic blacks in the west where darfur is located who are moslems. Egeland who pointed out that the darfur crisis is: the world"s worst humanitarian crisis. There is no other place in the world where so many lives are at stake . hundreds of thousands dead and six million internally displaced people -- that is five times more than were displaced by the indian ocean tsunami. It was in the year 2003 that civil society relief workers, human rights monitors and journalists described for the first time, a scorched-earth operation in western sudan. It concerned numerous victims against whom groups created by the arab dominated khartoum government were carrying out systematic slaughter.
