Psyc 341 - introduction & theories - the effect of stress on health and vice-versa. If this is what you look at, then you look at what causes people to become ill. If you look at this angle, you look at what enables people to stay healthy. Both of these are correct, however we will focus on the absence of disease more than the presence of illness. Slide notes: an important question to consider is how we define health. This is an important distinction because it influences the perspective we take with regards to public health. Is it just disease prevention or promotion of wellness. Hippocrates : very holistic view, saw support systems as beneficial. Thought that ill people needed to return to their home environments as quickly as possible. A state of mind had nothing to do with the state of the body. Galen : dissection of animals in order to learn about the functioning of different organisms.
