(know the differences between lamarck & darwin"s evolutions) We have a common ancestor, which brings on great similarity ealry on, with diversity emerging through time. Those with the most adaptive characteristics survive and, through inheritance, this leads to evolutionary change. Surviving => passing on your genetic material, influencing subsequent generations. Variational theory: the frequency of a characteristic increases (or decreases) within a population across generations. What is the proportion of th epopulation whih has a certain characteristic in relation to the rest of the popualtion. The taller giraffes must have something that allows them to survive better and puts them in a certain advantage. Five crticial components of darwin"s theory: characteristics change over time. Are they doing anything for this to happen: descent from a common origin, gradual change, population change. Change in the frequency of variations: natural selection. Note the difference between a passed down trait and one that is necessary for survival.
