How can we understand sociology: there are crucial connections between psychology and sociology. Social institutions impact individuals, their mental health and their lives: there always exists a convergence between psychology and sociology, even in societies who value the collective over the individual. The founding fathers on sociology often disagree on the emphasis placed on the collective vs the individual. ex: durkheim collective. Weber individual: sociology can be understood as looking at the symbolic. Symbolic interactionism: huge role in human communication and understanding. Taking an item far beyond its obvious or immediate self. ex: a bald eagle makes one think of freedom, liberty, the usa, etc. It holds symbolism far beyond being a bird. Symbols and forces: language and culture (including pop culture) are strong colonizing forces in society. Power to resonate with people: the internalization of these symbols and their cultural products transform us in to members of society.
