Let"s discuss the second question, which reads as follows: explain what karl marx means by "alienated labour" which is a serious problem in industrial capitalism. Remember that according to marx, labour should ideally involve both mental and physical capacities. As you know, the issue of labour is central for marx because he feels it is an integral part of what makes us human, that is, what marx and engels call our "species-being". As i said in class, marx may have underestimated the degree to which animals can think in abstract terms or bring creativity to bear in the labouring process. Therefore, let"s accept marx"s arguement that the labour of animals is specific, concrete, and hard-wired into them in evolutionary terms.
