SOCI 282 Lecture Notes - Lecture 1: Bp, Canadian Dollar, Social Inequality
Document Summary
Three major ways in which sociologist analyze society: functionalist, conflict, symbolic interactionist perspectives. All activities serve to keep the system going. Key functions are necessary for human systems (life, reproduction, order) Social stratification reflects the extent to which people serve the whole system. Deviance helps to define boundaries and limits of the system. Groups collaborate to protect and advance those interests. Marxist: fundamental differences of interests are the means of production (in capitalism: capital vs. labour) Feminist: fundamental difference of interest is gender. Marxists: those who own and control the means of production. Our understanding of the world is communicated by symbols, words, and rituals. Words, symbols, presentation of self and others, rituals, identity. Representations are made through discourse and symbols. Individual identity is constructed by our social relations. Control of image is critical for power. Control over representations is effective for social change. All members of a human society share a common space.
