Arguing that jesus who died on the cross was the messiah would be highly problematic. The heavenly messiah was supposed to come, defeat israel"s enemies and all evil. Usher in the kingdom of god and restore israel to its rightful place. In short, the messiah was not supposed to be killed. The early christians solved this by pointing to scripture. The interpreted various passages in the hebrew bible as predicting his death. Luke and matthew both use mark as the foundation of their gospels. They thus contain all the themes of mark. They also contain q, the collection of jesus"s teaching. They thus also have all the themes of jesus"s teaching. Their themes are more what aspects of the above they choose to emphasize. Birth stories provide main emphases of luke and matthew. They occur at the beginning of their gospels. Each story is unique and quite different from the other.
