ANAT 1010 Lecture Notes - Lecture 12: Skeletal Muscle, Mastoid Part Of The Temporal Bone, Costal Cartilage
Document Summary
Skeletal muscles shorten and pull on the bones they are attached to. The attachment of a muscle to the stationary bone. The attachment of a muscle to the movable bone. During speci c movements the actions are reversed and therefore the positions of the origin and insertion are switched. Skeletal muscle bers are arranged within a muscle in bundles called fascicles. Fascicles form a pattern with respect to the tendon: Fusiform: nearly parallel and taper toward tendons. Circular: form a sphincter to close an ori ce. Pennate: short fascicles in relation to total muscle length. Unipennate: fascicles are arranged on one side of the tendon. Bipennate: fascicles are arranged on both sides of the tendon. Myotactic re ex: after a muscle stretch is produced by tapping a tendon with a re ex hammer. Stability of joints and maintenance of posture: slight contraction (tone) even when relaxed in a conscious individual. Isotonic: muscles contract to produce movement (concentric and eccentric)
