The right kidney is unable to move upwards because the liver is directly superior to it whereas the left kidney is able to move up because there are no large organs directly above it. Transverse section across the abdomen: kidney located in the retroperitoneum, renal artery branch of aorta, renal vein drains into inferior vena cava. This is a transverse section across the abdomen at the level of the second lumbar vertebra (l2). The kidneys are in the retroperitoneum; they are behind the peritoneum.
